The ‘Friends of the Forest’ is a non-profit constituted community group which supports efforts to maintain the Forest as an accessible, open, green space of historic importance for the City of Nottingham, having been a former race ground, the site of a row of windmills and the current location of the Goose Fair. Funded by subscriptions and occasional donations, like the ‘Friends of the Arboretum’, it works very closely with staff at the City Council and Nottingham Parks Department, working with the former to prioritize refurbishment and replanting whilst organising voluntary activities that benefit the Forest and increase local awareness of green issues. For the past decade, members of the Friends of the Forest have organised an annual public ‘enclosure walk’ around all the green spaces resulting from the 1845 act, and will utilise material from this research project in future walks.
